This is part of a series, titled “Our Inner Alien” that explores the conversation we have with ourselves about our perceived faults.
It can be used as a self-love reminder when we are experiencing negative self-talk or added to a parent toolkit for coming-of-age children feeling all the feels.
We all experience triggers, which by definition is the modern word for being activated, provoked or something you react to. It has lately been used in lighter situations “I got triggered by my bosses demands” but it can also have deep and lasting reactions like PTSD where someone has an acute emotional or psychological reaction to something.
In the context of being grateful for a trigger, this relates to something we are conscious of, a trigger relating to something we are aware of that we are working on, and the lesson within that trigger is an opportunity to do some inner work and reflection, either on your own, or with your therapist.
As a parent, we can think of triggers as a prompting event, something that sparks a thought, which brings up an emotional reaction, which then comes with an urge to act. In the realm of psychology and behavioral studies, the trigger evokes a memory or environment where we may not have felt safe, or we may have felt betrayed or humiliated.
We can ask the question, why is this triggering me?
